Why CelluCaps™?

Why CelluCaps™?

Retinol is the benchmark anti-aging active and one of the hardest to formulate. Exposed to oxygen, light and other ingredients it oxidizes: formulas turn yellow, lose potency on the shelf and can irritate skin. CelluCaps™ RL encapsulates pure retinol in cellulose-based microcapsules using Tagra’s Release on Demand™ technology. The capsules keep retinol isolated through scale-up and storage, then break on gentle rubbing so it reaches the skin fresh. The oil-soluble active becomes a powder that disperses across all phases of a formulation.

What is encapsulated retinol?

Encapsulated retinol is pure retinol sealed inside microscopic capsules. The capsule protects it from oxygen, light and other ingredients while the product sits in the jar, then releases it onto the skin when the product is applied. Same molecule, better stability, gentler delivery.

CelluCaps™ RL is Tagra’s encapsulated retinol. Each capsule holds pure retinol inside an elastic, impermeable cellulose-based shell made with Tagra’s Release on Demand™ technology. The shell stays intact through mixing, filling and shelf life, and breaks under the gentle rubbing of application.

Why formulators encapsulate retinol

Retinol is the most studied anti-ageing active in skin care, and one of the hardest to keep working until the end of shelf life:

  • It oxidises. Air, light, heat and trace metals break retinol down. The formula yellows, develops an off-odour and delivers less retinol than the label claims.

  • It crystallises. Pure retinol can drop out of solution and discolour the base long before the claimed shelf life is up.

  • It clashes with other actives. Retinol and vitamin C, or retinol and acids, neutralise each other or need a pH that suits neither, so multi-active briefs get split into two products.

  • Irritation caps the dose. The concentration that performs is often the one that stings, so the claim gets dialled back.

Encapsulation addresses all four: the retinol is isolated from the base and from other actives, and it only meets the skin at the moment of use.

Meeting the EU retinol limit

EU Regulation 2024/996 caps vitamin A in cosmetics at 0.3% retinol equivalent (RE) in face and other leave-on and rinse-off products, and 0.05% RE in body lotions. It has applied to products placed on the EU market since 1 November 2025, and all products still on sale must comply by 1 May 2027. Products containing retinol must also carry the label warning “Contains vitamin A. Consider your daily intake before use.”

At the maximum recommended dose of 3%, CelluCaps™ RL delivers 0.27% retinol, within the 0.3% limit for face products. For body lotions, keep CelluCaps™ RL at or below about 0.5% to stay under 0.05% RE. Because encapsulation protects retinol from degrading, more of a lower, compliant dose is still active when the product is used.

How to formulate with CelluCaps™ RL

  1. Build the base first. Prepare your emulsion, gel or serum as usual. Choose a base with enough viscosity or structure to keep the capsules evenly suspended.

  2. Add at cool-down. Disperse CelluCaps™ RL in the cool-down phase. The shell withstands process temperatures up to 85 °C, so there is no need to rework your process.

  3. Mix gently. Use a paddle or anchor mixer. Avoid homogenising or high-shear mixing after the capsules are added, so they reach the customer intact.

  4. Combine actives freely. Because each active is isolated in its own capsule, CelluCaps™ RL can share a formula with vitamin C (for example CelluCaps™ C+E), acids or other actives that would normally react with retinol.

  5. Package sensibly. Opaque or airless packaging is still good practice for any retinol product and protects the rest of the formula.

  6. Test in your own base. Run stability and compatibility tests in your formula. Tagra’s application team can review your base and suggest a starting dose.

Encapsulated retinol vs free retinol

Free retinol and encapsulated retinol are the same molecule. The difference is protection and timing: free retinol is exposed to the formula from the day it is made and reaches the skin all at once, while encapsulated retinol stays protected until application and is released as the product is rubbed in. Encapsulated retinol: FAQ

What is encapsulated retinol?

Pure retinol sealed inside microcapsules. The capsule shell protects retinol from oxygen, light and other ingredients in the formula, then releases it onto the skin when the product is applied.

Why does retinol turn yellow in a formula?

Retinol oxidises when it meets air, light, heat or trace metals. The breakdown products are yellow and the retinol loses potency. Encapsulation keeps retinol isolated from the base, so the formula stays the colour it was mixed at.

Can I combine retinol with vitamin C?

Yes, when one or both are encapsulated. Each active stays inside its own capsule until application, so they cannot react with each other in the jar. CelluCaps™ RL and CelluCaps™ C+E are designed to work together in one formula.

Is CelluCaps™ RL nano?

No. CelluCaps™ RL is non-nano. The capsules are micron-sized and made from cellulose-based materials.

How much CelluCaps™ RL should I use?

1–3% in the US and up to 3% in the EU. At 9% retinol loading, that delivers 0.09–0.27% retinol in the finished product.

Does CelluCaps™ RL meet the EU 0.3% retinol limit?

Yes. At the maximum 3% dose it delivers 0.27% retinol, within the 0.3% retinol equivalent limit for face products under EU Regulation 2024/996. For body lotions (0.05% limit), use up to about 0.5%.
